Researchers who often do experiments know that organic synthesis is a process of preparing more complex target molecules from simple raw materials through one or more chemical reactions. General Procedure 5-2: 4-Chloro-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde[00195] A mixture of (4-chloro-2-(methylthio)pyrimidin-5-yl) methanol (9.0 g, 47 mmol) and activated MnO2 (70 g, 800 mmol, Aldrich Cat. No. 217646) in 120 mL CH2Cl2 was stirred at the room temperature for 24 hours. The mixture was filtered through Celite (Acros Celite 521, Cat.No. 206350010). The filter cake was washed with CH2Cl2 until no UV-active material was seen. The combined CH2Cl2 solution was concentrated and passed through a thin silica gel plug, using 25% EtOAc/Hexanes. The filtrate was concentrated to give an off white solid (6.37 g,71.6% yield).HPLC Rt: 5.53 min.1H-NMR (CDCl3): delta 10.32 (s, IH), 8.88 (s, IH), 2.65 (s, 3H).
