Flash chromatography (SiO2 /ethyl acetate-hexane=1:1, then ethyl acetate) of this material gave first 4-chloro-5-methoxypyrimidine (0.4 g, 27%) and then the desired product (1.2 g, 30%) as a light pink solid: m.p. 70-72 C.; IR (KBr) 1690, 1575 cm-1; 1 H nmr (200 MHz, CDCl3) delta 8.33 (s, 1H), 7.90 (s, 1H), 4.79 (br s, 1H), 4.4-3.8 (m, 3H), 3.86 (s, 3H), 3.35-2.90 (m, 3H), 1.48 (s, 9H), 1.21 (d, J=6.7 Hz, 3H).
